Can-o-worms

What I got for Christmas...

It's a worm-based composter! It's a series of trays, the bottom of which you fill with worms and household waste. As you continue to add waste to this tray it will eventually fill up. At this point you start to fill the next tray up. Once the worms have consumed the contents of the first tray they will move up into the next tray and continue as before. As soon as they reach the top tray you can remove the bottom tray and use the compost contained in it, then replace it at the top of the composter. The modular design means it's easy for the composting cycle to continue uninterrupted.

The whole package is incredibly well designed. It's made entirely out of recycled plastic. It's very sturdy. It has a ventilated lid. The bottom section has a tap from which you can draw off liquid fertilizer which seeps down through the compost. And the kit contains everything you need to run a worm composter almost indefinately - a bag of worm treat to kickstart the composting process, a bag of lime mix to control the acidity of yor composter, a block of bedding material to give your worms a comfortable first night and a moisture mat to keep them snug.

The first thing I had to do was send off my voucher for 500g of composting worms. They arrived a couple of days later in a ventilated package:

The next step is to dissolve the bedding block in warm water. The bedding is made of reln - nutritious cocunut fibre the worms will live in and eventually eat:

The reln expands quite a bit when mixed with water, so use a big bowl

Then tip the worms in:

Transfer the worms to the first tray of the composter.

Give the worms a small amount of kitchen waste to nibble on:

Put the worms in their tray onto the main composter. That's it - you're ready to compost!
